On June 6th, at the First Friday in Wailuku
Celebration, Gallerie Ha, located across
from Iao Theater, hosted three live bands
and spoken word poetry performences to a
crowded house. That event kicked off the
Friday Fundraising Showcase Series (by
donation) scheduled for each Friday, 6-8
pm, at Gallerie Ha.  Chela explains
enthusiastically, "Because poetry slams are
designed for the audience to react vocally
and openly, the public is invited to
participate as musicians and poetry
mentors. We want to stimulate creativity
and engage people in the revelry of
language!" Tax-deductible donations can be
made through Poetry Slam Inc. For

Maui Poets to Compete
in 2008 National Poetry Slam
Funds are sought to send them to Madison

For the first time in three years, Maui SLAM! is
officially qualified to send a team of our island's
top spoken-word poets to the National Poetry Slam
to be held in August at Madison, Wisconsin.  Poetry
slams are competitive events where poets perform
their original work, hence the term "spoken word."
They are judged by members of the audience, who
give numerical scores based on content and
performance. According to Chela Coennen, Maui SLAM!
co-producer, "Here on Maui, we have a diverse range
of work, including heartfelt love poetry, searing
social commentary, uproarious comic routines, and
bittersweet confessional pieces." National Poetry
Slam is the annual championship tournament, where
84 poetry teams from all over North America and
Europe gather to compete for the national title.
Funds are being sought to send Maui's team of four
to this competition.
On the Maui team are four poets who won the highest points at the monthly slams held at Casanova
in Makawao on the last Thursday of each month. Top scorer is Pat Masumoto, who owns Gallerie Ha,
where Maui's first poetry slam was held five years ago. An artist, playwright and musician with
Sing Sing Laugh Laugh, Pat was a finalist in the Hawaii Slam 2007 annual competition in Honolulu.
Jahsun Stoltz was also a finalist in the same competition. He and Michael Pinchaud, both of the
amazing Unsung Mighty Few, are conscious hip-hop artists and revolutionaries who have each won
multiple Maui Slams. The fourth member is J. Marc Manse, an accomplished actor, writer, and story
teller. Together, these outstanding talents make a knock-out showcase.
